Secondary School Scholarships
We believe everyone deserves the opportunity to achieve and excel beyond their given circumstances. At HELP, children that graduate from primary school have the opportunity to continue their education through our Secondary School Scholarship Program with the requirement to return to their primary school on holiday breaks to mentor younger students. As HELP’s outreach of primary schools grows, more students are graduating each year. It is our mission to provide access to Secondary School for not only Nanthomba School, but to our sister school’s graduates as well.
With the generous support from our dear friends, Louise Swart and the Wolvega Community, HELP has been able to provide over 20 scholarships in 2010/2011, 43 in 2011/2012 and 82 in 2012/2013. This was made possible by the generous support of Louise Swart, the Wolvega Community, and numerous sponsors from all over the World. Our first sponsored students to graduate included 17 students (ten males, and seven females) in the 2012/2013 academic year.
Progressing to Secondary School
Upon their completion of primary school, Malawian students take an exit exam. Those that score in the top percentiles are selected for a government secondary school. This is considered to be one of the highest honors a young Malawian can receive.
The tuition for secondary school per student is $570 a year ($2280 for all four years) and includes exam fees, a bike for transportation, uniform, medical care and basic school supplies. While this cost may seem trivial to us, it is often nearly equal to the gross national income per capita of just $380 per year. Due to the lack of funding, only 29% of boys and girls continued their education onto secondary school in 2011 (UNESCO).
Support A Child Through Secondary School:
For $570 a student is supported for one year and for $2,280 a student is supported for four years of secondary school.
